Testimonials we have received from previous customers.

We very much enjoyed the ten days we spent with you guiding us in Liguria. We appreciated your flexibility in tailoring the days to our needs, and enjoyed your personal excitement about Liguria — its culture, food, nature, and general ambience. And finally, it was a gas staying in the well-appointed small apartment in your house, and your impeccable British-English made it easy. All in all, we loved it.

I had the distinct pleasure of spending a couple of weeks this past summer with Lorenzo climbing Monviso and Toraggio West, canyoning, touring Liguria and eating/drinking the absolute best that the region has to offer.  Liguria just has so much to offer: crystal blue seas, the maritime Alps, fine local produce that results in regions divine cuisine, off the beaten international tourist path, rich in history and culture, excellent hiking, climbing and biking, not to mention the home of Lorenzo Gariano.
A little about Lorenzo – First, his English is impeccable (it would only be better if is accent were American rather than English).  Second, while he is a bit of a local hero as the only local man to have completed the Seven Summits (highest summit on each continent, including Everest), he is remarkably modest about this near superhuman achievements.  Third, Lorenzo is very astute and has a keen eye for finding the right trails for a groups ability, the right restaurant or right activity and at just the right time.

Liguria is a destination for the discerning traveler.  Lorenzo is the guy to show you the best it has to offer

September 2013

Dear Lorenzo, having returned home from a week spent exploring Liguria we would like to offer you our thanks for a most enjoyable holiday. Before we arrived, Liguria was a blank canvas to us and we had booked the visit on the recommendation of friends who had discovered the region, and you, a few years ago.
From the moment we met you we felt that we were in capable hands. Exploring a country when one does not have a good control of the language and when geographical knowledge is nil can be daunting, so your local knowledge and ability to speak English and Italian fluently was an important factor in creating a relaxing break for us.
Your expertise meant that the walks we undertook with you were pitched correctly at our ability and fitness levels and provided variety and interest tailored to our needs.
Good food is something we enjoy and you introduced us to local delicacies that we would otherwise have missed – the Tarta Verde was a delight! We dined in restaurants that were hidden gems – off the beaten track, yet lovingly run by families who took pride in using local, fresh ingredients.
Our memories of Liguria will stay with us and we have already recommended you and the countryside of your home region to our friends who enjoy walking, exploring and making new discoveries. As there is so much still to see and so many beautiful routes to be walked we plan to return and will book your guiding services again. ‘Molte grazie – a presto’.

At long last I have a few minutes to send this e-mail to say thank you for a lovely holiday.
Liguria is beautiful and your love and knowledge of the area shines through. The changes in the landscape make it an excellent area to walk, especially when guided by you, pointing out all areas of interest and explaining the history and culture. We saw so much and learnt so much.
The “cow tours” were a bonus and we thank you for taking all our interests into account when choosing each days walk.
Thanks once again for a wonderful holiday.

Having just enjoyed our fourth holiday in Liguria, we would like to pass on few comments about why we keep coming back. Lorenzo's passion for Ligurian culture, cuisine and flora and fauna adds so much to our enjoyment and his command of English means he can answer all our questions. Oh, and by the way, he is a qualified Botanist and one of Italy's most accomplished mountaineers.

If you really want to experience the best of Italian cuisine, Lorenzo will show you where the locals eat.

Overall, it is so relaxing when Lorenzo takes the responsibility of driving you, showing you the best of Liguria - and there is a lot to see - and arranging walks and visits to suit your personal needs.

I went on my first walk with Lorenzo more than four years ago, and I have been a regular client of Walking Liguria ever since. Why do I keep going back? We just never seen to come near to sampling all this little known (so far) corner of Italy has to offer. On the coast Liguria is marvellously Mediterranean, wonderful climate, delicious food that is natural through and through, relaxed and welcoming locals. Look up from the harbourside or the beach and you'll see the other Liguria. Not so far, but a world away, lie the richly-clad foothills leading ever upwards to the peaks of the Maritime Alps. There I have found breathtaking scenery, chamois, eagles and utter peace. I can't describe how it felt to stand in snowshoes at 2,000m on a crystal January day and look south to see Corsica big and bold in the vast blue of the sea, nearly 100 miles away.

In between the 'two countries' lie villages which combine great age and beauty, often perched high up a valley slope where grow the vines and crops that sustain a traditional and respected way of life. Each village has its own story to tell.

Lorenzo Gariano deserves a better description than 'guide'. Not for him the strict itinerary and the rigid schedule. After our first day on the trails he'd quietly clocked my weaknesses, strengths, likes and dislikes, and adapted the programme accordingly. His passion for this 'real' region that lies between the 'snooty beauty' of Tuscany and the pretentiousness of the Côte d'Azur is infectious. I'm glad a caught it.

What a wonderful week! The walks were challenging and exhilirating. The scenery beautiful and the food superb.

Lorenzo is the perfect guide. His passion for and knowledge of the countryside ensured that every day was packed full of interest.

We love Italy and the people. This was our seventh visit. We strongly recommend Imperia and the Riviera dei Fouri to you. You will not be disappointed.

As first time visitors to Italy, and somewhat nervous travellers, we were delighted to be met by Lorenzo at the Railway station, and taken first to eat at a nearby pizzeria, and then whisked off to our excellent accommodation just above the village of Poggi.

Lorenzo had a whole spectrum of walks available, and matched the walk each day to what he thought would be our capabilities. The weather was extremely hot, which slowed our progress, but always he could find a shady tree under which we sat for lunch, and ate wonderful locally cooked pies and pizzas.

Perhaps the most enjoyable walk was the most adventurous, though not the longest, in which, after a long drive, the car was parked at a height of 1600m, and we inched our way along the side of a wooded cliff and through a tiny gap between rocks at the Gully of incisa, into France, where we walked a further mile or so before returning by another small pass, the Valetta Pass (1900m) into Italy. Parts of the track were quite exposed, but always at the most exposed parts, one would find a few metres of cable to hold on to, a simpler version of the ferrata which is there on the more advanced routes.

All walks included points of interest in which we encountered isolated farmsteads, deserted churches or (nearly every day) stunning mountain villages, perched on rocky outcrops, with houses built somehow on tiny streets which ran in and out of one another, always with a piazza, where the local villagers were relaxing, and a medieval church.

Flora and fauna were abundant: butterflies in their hundreds with dozens of different species. Lizards noisily scurrying through the undergrowth, the occasional gecko, a three foot long snake, and one of us actually saw a wildcat disappearing amongst the rocks. Plant life ranged from the beautiful bougainvillea in the valleys, past olive groves and vineyards, to deciduous trees higher up. There were bushes of wild heather four feet high, wild roses and sweet peas, and we saw just one wild orchid in flower two or three weeks later than most of its companions.

Lorenzo was helpful in taking us to the supermarket (we were self-catering) and in guiding us to the best eating places. And the food was good. It was very good! And almost every day we had views of the sea, and the amazing Italian coast line. Bene, benissimo!

We can warmly recommend Walking Liguria for excellent walks, lovely food, an expert guide, and the beautiful Italian landscape. We hope to go again!

Walking in Liguria with Lorenzo is a unique experience. From being led through unspoilt undergrowth following our intrepid guide with his machete, and being presented with views of Medieval villages that defy gravity, to challenging Mountain Hikes that delight, and exhaust, but reward with stunning scenary with almost every breath. Add on coastal walks that fright and excite, and in contrast, wooded walks and can and do calm the soul, this is what on can expect on his walks. You will be entertainned by tales from the past of mysterious characters, folk lore, local history, geography, flora and fauna, all delivered in perfect English with self-depricating humour.

And if you are wanting a cave to shelter in, or a secret pool in which to swim, they seem to appear by magic... Lorenzo's local knowledge is infinite. At the end of the day, he can direct you, according to your mood, to a bar where you can rub shoulders with the locals, or sip a sophisticated cocktail on the Italian Riverira, or eat in a rustic trattoria, or dine in a gourmet restuarant. My friends and I have had two wonderful holidays with him this year, and are already planning trips for next. One seriously vigorous hiking, and the other a Gastro-walking Tour, and if possible, more of what we have already thoroughly enjoyed in lovely Liguria.

Our family had a wonderful stay in Liguria at the end of October. Unfortunately it was a brief stay but the welcome was warm and the scenery was stunning. We spent one afternoon exploring the old town of Imperia with Lorenzo, and he was able to point out unusual and interesting features which you might otherwise miss.

The following day, after a short drive into the mountains, we did a breathtaking walk. Lorenzo is an expert on the local history, as well as having a extensive knowledge about the flora and fauna of the area. We passed several via ferrata's which I would have loved to climb, but it was not possible on this occasion - one to go back for. There is a good review of this walk, 'The Alpine Trail' on Lorenzo's web site.

The food in this region of Italy is in a class of its own. One restaurant not to be missed is Censin da Bea, Borgomaro. Although the restaurant is a short drive from Imperia it is well worth a visit. Set in an old olive mill, the atmosphere is unique with a working mill wheel which the staff are happy to set in motion. There is a huge variety of traditional Italian food, and the wine is all inclusive - make sure that Lorenzo drives just in case you should have one too many. If you visit this area, you really should visit this restaurant.

We thoroughly recommend a visit to this unspoilt region of Italy and Lorenzo is the perfect guide to show you around. He speaks impeccable English, and he will show you hidden treasures from this region that will add up to an unforgettable holiday.

Thanks for a brilliant holiday, lisa, steve, lyn and myself really enjoyed the walking and Liguria, couldn't have felt more relaxed. I will send you the pictures when I can. Should of definitely had the extra night with you not in Nice.

Joe, Birmingham

Just a short note to thank you for everything you did for the four of us last week and to let you know just how much we enjoyed the experience. The guided walks were excellent and routes very well thought out and in particular the Alpine Trail was something special with it's varied and constantly changing surroundings and a walk I regard as the best I have done in Europe. In addition to the walking the food was also excellent and I now know why Italian food has the reputation it strongly deserves; the village of Poggi and it's surrounding villages offer the most spectacular views and a lot of interest e.g. village of the painted doors and village of the witches which we especially enjoyed. I will strongly recommend the area and guided walks to all friends and colleagues.

Thank you for everything and will be seeing you again soon.
